Task 3

Reading Passage:

The university administration is considering a significant change in the course requirements for undergraduate students. Currently, students are required to take two science courses, but the proposed change suggests increasing the requirement to three science courses. Proponents of this change argue that it would provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of scientific principles and better prepare them for future careers in science-related fields. However, critics of the proposal contend that it would place an additional burden on students, who already face heavy workloads. They argue that it could limit students' ability to explore other areas of interest. The administration is seeking feedback from students and faculty before making a final decision.

Listening Passage:

Student: Have you heard about the proposed change in the course requirements?

Professor: Yes, I just received an email about it. What do you think?

Student: Well, they want to increase the number of required science courses from two to three. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Professor: I understand your concern. It could certainly be a challenging adjustment for students. On the other hand, it might provide a more well-rounded education in the sciences.

Student: That's true, but I worry that it will limit our options to explore other subjects. Some students may have other areas of interest they want to focus on.

Professor: I see your point. It's important for the administration to consider the potential impact on students' overall academic experience.

The question:

The woman expresses her opinion about a proposed change in the course requirements. Summarize the change and state the woman's opinion. Then, explain the reasons she provides to support her opinion.

My Answer:

The university try to make a new policy regarding undergrad students should take three science courses instead of two.  from the conversation between students and the professor it can infer that the professor really agree with that policy because it can be more understanding for students in sciences, but the woman in this case perhaps she is a student, she believes and argue that this kind of policy can make students have limited options and can reduce the interest of them to study.  so the woman seems not really agree with the policy and the professor suggests the administration of University must find the balance

Task 4

Reading Passage:

Cognitive dissonance is a psychological theory that explains the discomfort individuals experience when their thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes conflict with their actions. According to this theory, people strive for consistency and will actively seek to reduce cognitive dissonance. For example, imagine a person who considers themselves environmentally conscious but frequently uses single-use plastic. This inconsistency creates cognitive dissonance, which can be resolved by either changing behavior (using less plastic) or changing beliefs (justifying plastic use). Understanding cognitive dissonance is crucial in understanding how individuals make decisions and how they reconcile conflicting thoughts and actions.

Alex: Hey, Emily! I just learned about this interesting concept called cognitive dissonance in my psychology class. Have you heard of it?

Emily: Yeah, I have! It's fascinating how our thoughts and behaviors can create discomfort when they're in conflict.

Alex: Exactly! It's like when you know you should exercise regularly for your health, but you find yourself consistently skipping the gym.

Emily: Oh, I can relate to that. I feel guilty about not studying enough while I spend hours watching TV.

Alex: That's a classic example of cognitive dissonance! It's that internal conflict that pushes us to either change our behavior or rationalize our actions.

Emily: Right, like when people convince themselves that it's okay to indulge in unhealthy food once in a while because they exercise regularly.

Alex: Precisely! Cognitive dissonance plays a significant role in decision-making and how we navigate inconsistencies in our thoughts and actions.

Task 6

Listening Passage:

Lecturer: Today, we're going to delve into the fascinating topic of how the position of birds' eyes is critical to their survival. Birds have evolved unique eye placements that contribute significantly to their ability to navigate their environment and find food. Let's explore some examples to understand this concept better.

Firstly, consider birds of prey, such as eagles and hawks. These raptors have forward-facing eyes, which provide them with binocular vision. This means their eyes are positioned in the front of their heads, allowing them to focus on a single point with both eyes simultaneously. This binocular vision gives them excellent depth perception and precise judgment of distance. It's crucial for their hunting success, as they can accurately judge the distance to their prey while soaring high in the sky.

On the other hand, some birds, like owls, have eyes positioned on the sides of their heads. This arrangement grants them an extremely wide field of view. Owls can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees, thanks to their flexible necks, and their eyes are perfectly adapted to take advantage of this freedom. With eyes on the sides, they can survey their surroundings almost entirely without moving their heads, which is especially useful for detecting potential predators or prey while remaining hidden in trees or bushes.

Furthermore, water-dwelling birds, like ducks and swans, have eyes placed high on the sides of their heads. This configuration allows them to keep their eyes above the waterline while swimming, enabling them to scan the surroundings for predators or other birds. Their eyes have a wide visual field, including the ability to see almost directly behind them, which is crucial for their safety.

In summary, the position of birds' eyes plays a vital role in their survival and adaptation to their specific habitats. Whether it's the binocular vision of raptors for precise targeting, the wide field of view of owls for stealthy hunting, or the high side placement in water-dwelling birds for increased safety, each eye position is a remarkable adaptation that contributes to their survival.

The question:

Explain how the position of birds' eyes is critical to their survival. Provide examples from the lecture to support your explanation.

My Answer:

According to the lecture position of bird eyes is really important and essential for birds to thriving life.  some of them has unique placement, the professor gives three examples of that.  the first one bird like eagles or hawk that have their eyes like binocular it can give focus to single point and give them their perception in terms of success of their hunting activity.  the second example Is about owl, that owl have their eyes side by side that can give them wide views to find surrounding without moves their head so it can find their food easily . And the third example is the birds that have their eyes on the high side such as duck or swan it can give their ability to see above the water and also wideviews  that can give alert for them to get safety

ChatGPT Assessment, based on TOEFL iBT rubrics in scale out of 4 for each rubric (Delivery, Language Use, Topic Development):

Delivery: 3

Feedback: Your response effectively summarizes the lecture and provides examples to support your explanation of how the position of birds' eyes is critical to their survival. The examples are relevant and well-explained. However, the response could benefit from some improvement in clarity and sentence structure.
